Australian Bird scoops, Dog spoons, carved wren & Williewagtail

Australian Bird scoops, Dog spoons, carved wren & Williewagtail
19 April 2026

Well hello again 👋
Thankfully the weather has started to feel a lot nicer of late. However, with the change of seasons my chronic illnesses have started to play up again.
Nothing that I can explain, just an overall lack of energy and get up and go! With everything being such an effort. I hate sitting when the day is warm & bright with seemingly nothing to trouble me. It seems like a waste of a beautiful day. But, at least it's not blazingly hot and pleasant to be outside.
I am assuming once the weather settles down into a nice pattern again I will start to feel better with less fatigue.

I didn't realise until just now how long it has been since I last wrote a blog entry, it's been 4 weeks or more, how slack am I !!

Well, I haven't been sitting doing nothing.
I have carved and painted a collection of bird spoons/scoops.
I wanted to get them all finished together and uploaded into my online shop at the same time. It took some time to get them all carved and painted, taking individual photos and videos and to write a description for every one of them.

At the moment I have a set of painted and natural wood bird spoons/scoops which include- Magpie, Crimson Rosella, Williewagtail, kookaburra, and a male fairy wren. I have also done a trial carving of a yellow robin and a gang gang spoon. Both are waiting to get painted at the moment.

Each spoon can be found in my shop & can be purchased individually or as a set.

I had a very difficult time deciding on the price. That was another reason why it took so long to get them uploaded. I find putting a cost on my work very difficult.
Just carving and sanding a spoon takes approximately 2 -3 hours. If they are painted, it's another hour or so because you need to give them a base coat before painting their correct colours, then add some painted details and varnishing them also takes more time.
And it can't be done all at once, but over several sessions.

I decided to seal the birds with a water-based varnish for paint protection then wax the scoop area & the entire carving for uniformity.
So the whole process of creating a spoon for purchase isn't a quick one. So how to price all that effort...... I really don't know, but I have kept the prices as low as I am happy with. I would like to have the prices higher,  but I don't think they would sell.

I saw this rooster head that I thought might look good on a scoop as well. So I have made a start on him. I have only carved the front and will leave the back flat. But he looks good so far.

I have also started on a set of dog topped spoons/scoops. Experimenting with the different breeds. As I haven't carved many dogs each one is new to me. But thankfully they all have 4 legs, a head and a body, which just look slightly different from one another.
